One Big City. Eight Crossing Guards

Monday was the first day of school. And since Czech drivers were not used to kids on pedestrian crossings, the municipality sent cops to watch over the pedestrian crossings near schools. And an announcement was made to pensioners who would like to volunteer to be crossing guards for the day.

Only eight people applied. And since the municipal police realized this might be a good idea, pensioners turned crossing guards will be seen near schools for months to come.  I said it before and I will say it again: I am really surprised that nobody has thought of this sooner…

Back To School: Into A Drug Test…

The first day of school, it is not just class schedule announcement, or friendly hello’s with classmates. A certain high school in the city of Ceske Budejovice conducted a special drug test among students. Anonymous ones. A sticker is attached to a door knob or anything that is touched by more than one student. A few seconds later the sticker is removed and sprayed with a special substance. And the sticker changes colors according to the illegal substance that some student used before going to school.

The test does not find the specific drug user, it just gives the school principal the idea as to how many students come to school doped up. On the first day of school…

I am not an expert but from what I have read and heard, marijuana can be traced in the user’s blood even two days after he smoked it. So doing the test on Monday (translated: just one day after a weekend party) is quite, well, tricky. Anyone who brings joints to class should be expelled instantly, but going after stoned students on Mondays is not the anti-drug policy schools should follow…
