Weekend in Croatia: 26 hours on the bus, 12 hours on the beach

A few people said I was crazy, but I just had to try it. I bought a return bus ticket  (why did I write the word “ticked” without noticing??) to Rovinj, Croatia for the next week.

Leaving on Friday night, the bus arrives in Rovinj at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday. I get to spend 13 hours in a beautiful town and on its beaches — and the bus back to Brno departs at 8:00 p.m., arriving in Brno on Sunday morning.  Hence, the total journey takes up some 25 hours while the rest-and-relaxation only lasts twelve.

But hey, the town is beautiful and the nude beaches are even better — plus I can sleep well on buses so the journey is not going to be exhausting…

UPDATED: Nude Beach In Yellowstone National Park?

May 31, 2008 Petr Bokuvka 3 comments

Here is an idea: there should be a beach in Yellowstone National Park. People would be allowed to walk around naked or lie on their blankets and towels, but they would not be allowed to swim in any of the lakes.

Sounds crazy? This is exactly what is happening in Brno. Here. This former quarry and its surroundings are a natural reserve with some endemic species of flowers and grasses.

Nudists like to come there even though the area has never been declared as a recreation area, of course. People are not forbidden to ENTER, so if they decide to lose their clothes and catch a tan it does not bother anyone.

The season started yesterday because it was 28°C.

Which brings me back to the original idea: what can be more symbolic for the, let’s say, nudist philosophy than a nude beach in a national park? :)

UPDATE:: Obviously I know less about U.S. geography than I thought. As Jim comments on this post and explains, it is too cold to be naked there in any season. So that was a bad example. So let’s say Mount Rushmore? Bryce Canyon? I know, not really green and grassy around there…

Brno Tourism Tips: The Brno Dam and the Veveri Castle

May 4, 2008 Petr Bokuvka 3 comments

When staying in Brno for several days, it pays off to rent a bike and make bike trips around the Brno Dam. There are comfortable bike paths that lead not only to the Veveri Castle [here is my photo gallery], but also to nearby villages that might give the foreigners a hint on how some Czechs live. :)

The Brno Dam is a cool place to relax, but it is not that cool when it comes to swimming. After several hot days the cyanobacteria that is found in the muds and sands makes the water green and unusable for most people.  But still, some people to take a dip and they take shower immediately afterwards to minimize the risk. Plus, there is a huge nude beach there that gets crowded no matter how green the water is.

The Veveri Castle used to be one of the most devastated castles in the country and it has been undergoing major renovations now. It is one of the largest castles in Moravia and it was probably built at the end of 12th century for local aristocracy that used to hunt in the nearby woods. Now it offers tourists various events, like medieval re-enactments. There is a boat line that is a part of the Brno public transportation authority system. You can buy a combined ticket that is good for both the boat ride and for entering the castle…

Czech Nudists In Winter: Heading To Germany

November 29, 2007 Petr Bokuvka Leave a comment

There are many favorite places for nudists in the Czech Republic. Unfortunately their season ends in early September. Those who want to enjoy their hobby between October and May might go on vacation to the Canary Islands. Which is relatively expensive, even though last-minute sales are pretty good deals.

Or they get in the car and in three hours they are in Ludwigsfelde, near Berlin. There is a thermal water park. And it is a no-swimsuit-allowed waterpark: Kristalbader Ludwigsfelde.

Several pools, more than ten kinds of sauna with all kinds of aromatherapy.

Was there last weekend. During five hours I met/saw twenty Czechs. That’s a lot…

Only several pools offer nude swimming in winter. In some towns a certain number of people must be signed up in advance. And in others only couples, families and single women are allowed.
