Another Czech Movie Premiere Leaked

In Culture on October 16, 2007 by Petr Bokuvka

It has been a “good year” for Czech movie pirates. Three Czech movies could be seen in the theaters AND on the Internet on the same day. High school comedy “Gympl” which is now generating decent profit on the big screen is downloadable as well.

The production company and the movie director are outraged.

My theory: Among the reasons why so many (well, almost all) Czech movies appear on the Internet so soon is the existence of the State Cinematography Development Fund. This fund is maintained by the Culture Ministry and filmmakers can apply for grants and funds so that they could start shooting. Okay, so average taxpayer’s money is used by lousy to below-average filmmakers so that they would not be unemployed.

As a journalist I should condemn piracy but I can’t help it. I don’t feel sorry for the authors at all…
