Roma Kids Skip School Already

In Education & Science on October 22, 2007 by Petr Bokuvka

Five weeks since the school started and some elementary schools in Brno have to start fighting the problem named truancy. Or, skipping school, the Brno Daily writes

According to the Deputy Mayor of one of Brno’s boroughs the attendance record of some Roma kids is “catastrophic”. Some kids do not come to school for a month. I know a pediatrician who did not want to write a sick note to one child. The kid’s relatives then spray painted obscene words all over the office, the Deputy Mayor told the daily.

Some children stay home because their siblings do. Most usually this happens on Fridays. Even the parents often write notes to the teachers that their kid [8 to 10 years of age] had to stay home and take care of younger siblings
