When Communism Doesn’t Go Well

Ever since I took a small break from being a full-time newspaper editor with 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. shifts, I have been able to enjoy regular book evenings, or afternoon on a beach [at the lake]. Right now it is a book about the history of the former East Germany [GDR, prior to unification].

There is a chapter on how communists would organize life for women for various bizarre reasons. It proves how communists behave when something doesn’t go according to plans. In the 1960’s the German ones organized women to shut them up. In 1961 they built a wall to keep the “good ones” away from the “bad ones” [you pick yourself which side is which]. In 1968 the Russian ones sent tanks to Czechoslovakia [btw: 40th anniversary this week].

And in 2008 the Chinese ones, while hosting the Olympics, impose house arrests, restraining orders, Internet censorship, manipulation.

To-may-to. To-mah-to.

It is ridiculous that athletes are forbidden to make political statements. IOC’s giving the games to China WAS one.
