Suggestion: Thirty-Second Following Distance For Trucks

In Cars, Travel on September 5, 2008 by Petr Bokuvka Tagged: , , ,

The main Czech freeway, D1, collapses every day. Ten-kilometer traffic jams because of some idiots behind the wheels of 18-wheelers. Today, THREE trucks collided near Brno. Usually the trucks involved in accidents travel in the same direction.

Sometimes they would not even observe the two-second following distance rule. And of course, once a truck starts braking rapidly, another driver who is almost glued to the end of the trailer has almost no time to react.

There should be LONGER mandatory following distance for 18-wheelers. Let’s say the rule would order truck drivers under normal circumstances to maintain at least 30 second following distance. Therefore, if something happens, any driver would have enough time to react and stop relatively safely.
